Meet Dr. Adil Shamji

Dr. Adil Shamji is an emergency physician who has devoted his career to helping people. After graduating from Western University and medical school at the University of Toronto, he worked in Indigenous communities across Canada and is trained in family and emergency medicine. Practicing medicine while being an elected official gives Dr. Shamji a unique perspective that informs his advocacy on health policy and the impacts that policy decisions have on the everyday lives of Ontarians. Dr. Shamji also holds a Master’s degree in Public Policy from the University of Oxford. He was appointed the Medical Director for 11 homeless shelters in Toronto as part of the City’s pandemic response efforts, experiencing firsthand the pressures of the pandemic and the inequalities within our healthcare system. Dr. Shamji also holds the rank of Lecturer in the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Toronto.
Dr. Shamji has served as the Ontario Liberal Caucus critic for Housing, Health, and Northern & Indigenous Issues, and served on the Standing Committee on Social Policy and Ontario Liberal Caucus Critic for Colleges and Universities from 2022-2024. As an MPP, Dr. Shamji has proposed legislation that would restrict private payments for nurse practitioner services, unlock opportunities to build more housing, establish greater protections for temporary nursing professionals, and establish new standards for government accountability and transparency by releasing cabinet mandate letters from the Premier. Dr. Shamji is has represented the riding of Don Valley East as a Member of Provincial Parliament since 2022 and hopes to continue to advocate for his constituents’ best interests within the community and at Queen’s Park. Dr. Shamji is committed to making government work in the best interests of everyone across Ontario, and believes that all policy is health policy.
